I got GAS

Monday, August 17th, 2009

GAS or gear acquisition syndrome - I think we all suffer from it. It seems to get worse when you have no income just like your car breaking down the one day you need it most….so cruel. Jarrod’s blog reminded me that I’ve been ogling pedals too. What’s on the list…
an optical compressor, an EQ pedal, and a bass overdrive BUT I have a solution that doesn’t take so much $$$ it’s DIYstompboxes. Time to break out the soldering iron! I wonder if I can fit 3 pedals in one box…

ToneFactor Makes Me Cry Tears of Lust… What?

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Like all musicians, I suffer from the disease “gottabuygearitis”. It’s the obssessive impulse to buy music gear you don’t need and can’t afford in order to find “the sound”. It was fine back in the days before the internet, when you could just deny all the rumors about how awesome Lovetone and Z-Vex and any of the other awesome boutique pedals were. But now in the age of broadband, you’re just a couple clicks away from hearing how awesome you could sound if only the blood-bank will let you sell them some platelets one more time this month.

For some killer pedal demos and a wide array of boutique stuff, cruise on over to ToneFactor. (BTW, look at the logo on their site. I know it’s a guitar pedal, but I instantly think Flux Capacitor.) Gearmanndude is a fan, so what’s not to love? Here’s the current object of all my musical wet dreams, the Empress Tap Tremolo, as demo’d by the guys over at TonFactor.

Hands On a Hard Body

Monday, August 10th, 2009

I saw the holy grail of all Docufilms the other day.

Here is the trailer…it hardly does the film any justice.

It reminds me of Reno 911, except these people are for real.

Burt Reynolds Pillow

This is a Burt Reynolds Pillow spotted in a South Congress Shop in Austin. Note the realistic fuzzy moustache and leopard print. Why leopard print? I think it’s a requirement in his merchandising contract.

Guilty Pleasure: Baby I’m a Want You

Monday, July 20th, 2009

This is a great song by the band Bread. A friend recently sang it to his bride at their wedding. There’s nothing wrong with it except I get the feeling that no man in the 21st century should like it. But it just makes me feel good.
